THE Tokoh Persatuan Melayu Pulau Pinang (Pemenang) awards ceremony honoured a group of Penangites for their contributions to society.

Among the recipients were ex-Penang Free School teacher Tengku Hamidah Tengku Mahadi, 69, who received the Tokoh Pendidikan (Education) award.

“I enjoyed every minute I spent in the teaching world,” she said after receiving the award.

“I have so many fond memories of teaching at Penang Free School for 20 years.”

Tengku Hamidah taught at the school from 1975 to 1995. She moved to several other schools before retiring in 2002.

Another retired teacher Sabariah Md Noor also received the Tokoh Pendidikan award.

Bagan Jaya Wanita Umno chief Jumabi Mohamed and entrepreneur Hasnah Akhbar received the Tokoh Kemasyarakatan award (Social Welfare) while badminton coach Mohamed Ali Shaik Isa Zubidee was recognised for his contributions to sport.

Businessmen Datuk Ibrahim Md Isa, Abdul Azmi Jaafar, Mohamed Fadzill Hassan and Abdul Azmi Jaafar received the Tokoh Usahawan (Entrepreneurship) award while mosque imam Saleh Hashim was presented with the Tokoh Agama (Religion) award.

They all received certificates and medals from Pemenang.

The awards were presented on Wednesday to mark Pemenang’s Maal Hijrah Open House celebrations.

Also present at the ceremony was Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya.
